What does love really mean? Some people think that love is a feeling, or something desirable or pleasurable, like your favorite kind of ice cream or something, but that is not what true biblical love is. Love is not a feeling, it is a commandment. John 13:34: A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
John 15:12: This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
Jesus commands us to love people in the same way that he loves us. He gave his life, shed his blood, and went through horrible pain and agony to pay for our sins and keep us out of hell. That is a great love beyond description.
I John 4:7: Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
Love means giving. God loves us so much that he gave his only son to die for us. John 3:16: For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Love is giving your best for another person's benefit, being unselfish. It's pressing on and going the extra mile, even when you are tired and weary and feel like you can't go on. Jesus gave everything for us, and he tells us to love others in the same way he loved us.
What kind of people does God love? Ungodly people are who he loves.
Romans 5:6: For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. It was for sinners that Jesus died, not for good people. Matthew 9:12-13 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. 13: But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice; for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. God has dwelt with us with mercy, and as such, we should show mercy to others.
